The Devon & Cornwall Military Club

Trevor Minett  (Club Chairman)

The Second World War vehicles that were on show at Meavy Oak Fair are owned by members of the Devon & Cornwall Military Vehicle Club and they represent a small part of the 100 plus preserved vehicles in our area. These 60 plus year old vehicles are the result of their owners hobby, having been restored by many hundreds of hour of hard work, they how form part of our living history. Not just a static display in a museum, they can often be seen travelling to and from commemoration events, both in the UK and Europe to support the surviving veterans of various conflicts, sometimes having the honour of transporting those veterans on parades though the cities & towns where they were fighting for our freedom.

When attending local events & vintage rallies, they are a reminder for older generations, and for the younger, hopefully a little insight into WW2 history, as well as examples of 60 year old vehicle technology, the forerunners of our present day trucks & 4x4s. Among the vehicles the best known is the Jeep, between 1940 & 1945 a total of 646,064 Jeeps were produced in the USA, fitted with a 2200cc side valve engine, 3speed gear box, a selectable 4 wheel drive transfer box, with high/low ranges, following the war its design was copied by Land Rover, and the 80’’ series 1 was born.

One Jeep you may see around our area is VIXEN TOR which is a replica of a jeep used in 1944 by Major General Charles H Gerhardt. His HQ was situated in the woods below Vixen Tor, were the men of the American 29th Inf. Div. were training for D Day, and on the 6th of June 1944 his Jeep landed on Omaha beach in Normandy. The original Jeep is still in existence, and resides in the 5th Armoury Museum in Baltimore, America. In 1994 it was transported to Normandy to take part in the 50th Commemoration of D-Day along side many 29th Infantry Veterans.

The iconic GMC 6x6, 2 ½ ton general purpose troop carrier. better known by it’s nick names, ‘Deuce an’ a half’ or ‘Jimmy’, the one we brought to Oak Fair , was built in early 1944 at GMC’s works in Chicago, it was shipped to England to take part in the landings in Normandy, following the war it served with the French army, after it’s disposal it was retuned to England & left to deteriorated, until it’s purchase and restoration in 1994, it has since made several commemorative tours to France & Holland. One of 500,000 produced during WW2, it is fitted with a 6 cylinder 4.4 litre OHV petrol engine 5 speed gear box (with a very strange lay out) and selectable 6 wheel drive transfer box with high/low range.

The Dodge was built in 1942 & saw service in North Africa; it is fitted with a 3800cc 6 cylinder side valve engine, 4 speed gear box and selectable 4 wheel drive transfer box. After the war it worked in Cornwall, as a break down truck, before becoming a star appearing in the films, ‘Yanks’, ‘Patton’, and ‘A Bridge Too Far’, in which during stunt work it was badly damaged, & disposed of. Saved from the scrap yard and totally restored in early1994 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of D Day. It has since made several tours to France, Guernsey, and Holland including going back to the Bridge at Arnham.

The armoured car is called a Dingo it was manufactured in 1942 by Daimler & served with the British army, its war history is not recorded, but during its restoration sand coloured paint & the stags head sign of the 22nd Armoured brigade was discovered, so it probably was in North Africa, later markings reveal its service with Both the Westminster Dragoons, & Berkshire & Westminster Dragoons. In 1967 it was to be used in Biafra, on its way to the docks the water pump failed so was disposed of by the army. It was purchased then stored till 1993, before being restored, once again in the colours of the Berkshire & Westminster Dragoons, who ironically its present Ex REME owner was attached to during his military service its 2500cc ohv engine drives a 5 speed pre-selectable gearbox via a fluid flywheel (no clutch) to permanent 4wheel drive it has a forward & reverse leaver so in theory could go the same speed backwards

The Devon & Cornwall Military Club is dedicated to the restoration and preservation of military vehicles of all ages and nationalities together with uniforms equipment and history.

Editorial

Jenny Sharp

Many thanks to all the positive comments I received about my first issue of the Beacon, although remember I am just the editor putting it all together; it is the contributors who write the words.

This issue is another one filled with articles from all corners of the Parish; we have a report on the Open Gardens Weekend from Sheepstor, thinking ahead to a Christmas Pantomime in Meavy and news from Lady Modiford’s School in Walkhampton. There are reminders about the Garden Shows in Meavy and Walkhampton, the Walkhampton Arts and Crafts Festival and an update on our local football team. Many of you have probably seen WW2 vehicles driving around our country lanes, now you can read all about them in the article from the Devon and Cornwall Military Club.

The deadline for the Autumn edition is 6th September, but early submission of articles is always welcome! The Dates for your Calendar section below can include dates up to 12 months in advance so get setting your dates and let me know.

Clerk’s Report

Lucie A Luke

Elections were uncontested for the Parish Council with nine Councillors being elected and two further Councillors co-opted since. This leaves us with 5 vacancies: 3 for Walkhampton-Dousland and 2 for Meavy-Dousland. Any further interested residents within the Parish can apply for co-option by writing to me, The Clerk, 23 Canons Way, Tavistock PL19 8BJ.

The Tenancy for the Royal Oak Inn has been advertised creating much interest far and wide. Interviews for short listed candidates will be held at the end of June with a view to a smooth handover in October. An annual inspection of the Inn has been carried out to identify a list of repairs and maintenance to be addressed over the next twelve months.

It was recently reported that the trees on Walkhampton Green are causing loss of light to the houses nearby. We have consulted with Mr Beesley of Dartmoor National Park, who has visited the Green. He requests that any concerns are addressed directly to him by those residents so that each individual concern can be dealt with appropriately.

Chairman’s Report

Chaz Symes

The Burrator Parish Council elected me as Chairman after the May Elections this year. Firstly I would like to thank Michael Parle for conducting his role as Chairman prior to my election in an exemplary manner. I learnt a lot about the role of chairmanship from him, when I was the Vice Chairman.

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as your new Chair. My name is Chas Symes and I live in Walkhampton. I have been a Parish Councillor since 2003 and have been the Chairman of the Parish Planning Committee for the last few years. The Parish Council of Burrator has an important role in contributing to how we all live our lives in this area and Devon generally. However small a Parish Council may be when compared against Central Government, we do have an effective voice in local affairs. Both local Borough and County Councillors have regular meetings with us. We are able to not only to seek information from them about matters that effect the Parish but offer our views about things that are important to us.

In the forthcoming year there are sure to be a number of issues that people feel strongly about. The Parish Council can affect the outcomes on local issues. A recent Housing Needs Survey conducted by the Community Council of Devon may have a major effect on how many new dwellings may or may not be built within this Parish.

On another matter, Dartmoor National Park Authority is presently reviewing its Core Strategy Development Plan Document. This plan will set the scene for how the Authority operates until 2026. The Parish Council and you have an opportunity to contribute to this debate on how the plan is formulated in the future. The DNPA will accept comments on the plan between 26th June 07 and 27th July 07. If you make comments to the DNPA about the plan, I would be grateful if you could copy them to our Clerk, Lucie Luke.

Unfortunately, we will not be responding directly to you, but your comments could inform the debate we may have as a Parish Council. The DNPA has organised local “Drop In” sessions to learn more about the document and comment on it. There is a local session on 28th June 2007 at St Paul’s Church, Yelverton between 1pm -7pm.

It is not only planning that the Parish Council has an official function to be involved in locally. Did you know that your local Parish Council has the opportunity to be involved in 39 “functions” of local interest ranging from Allotments, Churchyards and Burial Grounds, Highways, Land, Newsletters, Public Conveniences, Tourism, Transport and War Memorials? That’s just nine – any idea about the other thirty? If you want to know about the other thirty please ring me to find out what you could do to make a difference to your local area.

We presently have a number of opportunities for members of the public to join us as new councillors. If you are over 18 years of age and live within 3 miles of the Burrator Parish boundary, we would like to hear from you. Why not ring me to find out more about being a parish councillor?

Panto Time Is Here Again!

Graham Dimmock  (Meavy Parish Hall)

A lot of people have suggested that Meavy Parish Hall should host a Panto. Oh, yes they have. (Oh, no they haven’t). Oh yes they have! Well, there really are some people who are determined that in January 2008 Meavy Hall will stage the first of a long running series of pantomimes. Right now we don’t have a script, we don’t have a cast and we don’t have a stage crew but we do have enthusiasm and a dream!

Pantos are great fun for the audience but often they are even more fun for those involved in producing the show. There are acting roles for all talents (oh, yes there are!) and backstage there are jobs involving costumes, lighting, sound, prompts, scenery, make-up and so on. And everybody involved gets to meet new friends and shares all the tears and laughter that go into making a live performance.

Would you like to get involved? Oh, yes you would!!! Don’t think you’re not good enough. Our director trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, so your hidden talents will be expertly drawn out. And backstage your technical skills (sewing, electrics, carpentry) will be more valued than you could ever imagine. Ask any actor what has made the show a success and the answer will be “Look behind me”! And if you are a musician… we need you.

How do you get involved? Start by calling one of the people below right now. We plan to meet in early July to get the show on the road, so don’t delay – phone today. It doesn’t matter where you live. It matters that you want to be involved.

To get involved, meet new friends and be the envy of all your friends – phone Graham Dimmock 859331, Joyce Williams 855396, Ruth Penrose (01752) 345833 or Robert McIntosh 855523.

Sheepstor Open Gardens 2007

Patrick Drennan

Sheepstor’s Chelsea on June 8th & 9th was graced with fantastic June weather, and a steady stream of visitors. The owners of 9 gardens stuck their heads above the weeds to be criticised by their horticultural peers, despite some doom & gloom mutterings about injury claims, casing of joints and who would want to see our little patches. All visitors were strip searched for secateurs, pruning knives, and seed collecting containers, and then let loose, hopefully to enjoy the varied displays.

A magnificent band of volunteers supervised the catering at the Village Hall, with refreshments, ploughman’s lunches and cream teas. The home made trugs sold out very quickly (? more for the Christmas Craft Fair) and the gardeners obviously appreciated our plant sale of cast offs.

After initial panic, the impromptu car park was cleared of sheep, and because of the balmy weather the emergency towing tractor remained idle.

The younger visitors (and some older ones too!) were well entertained by a Treasure Hunt quiz dreamed up by Trevor Rookes and showed that local education is well up to the mark.

My thanks to the gardeners who fed the minds of the visitors, the willing band of helpers who fed their stomachs, David and Justine Colton for the loan of their field for the car park, and most of all to the visitors, who contributed over £400 to the Village Hall funds. I’m also grateful to my gurus from Dousland and Mary Tavy open garden schemes for their advice and support.

Any comments, criticisms and suggestions for a possible repeat in the future would be much appreciated. Feedback so far has been very positive.

Lady Modiford’s School Walkhampton

Gavin Hamilton  (Head Teacher)

Like many schools, Lady Modiford’s has a rich and varied extra curricular provision. Our children have taken part in many sporting events, some even visiting Twickenham to see England play Italy in an international rugby match. We have a good selection of peripatetic music with a school band and even have a gardening club. However it is our link with Plymouth Theatre Royal I have been asked to tell you about here.

A chance phone call to an old colleague put me in touch with ‘TR2’ where the education wing of the theatre is based. I had heard that the theatre were looking for some primary schools to take part in an opera project. So we were very fortunate to have several members of the Glyndeborne Opera Company visit the school to do a workshop with some of our older children followed by a short production for our parents in the afternoon. It was certainly something for us to hear professional singers in our small hall and the workshop was a great success.

The children were had enjoyed the visit so much that I rang the Theatre to see if there were any other things we could get involved with. Opera is an art form we don’t really see in primary schools too often but certainly provided a great experience for the pupils. The Theatre then offered us the chance to take part in a school’s performance with the Welsh National Opera who were touring. They came into the school for a morning and worked with some of the children who were then invited to the Pavilions during the Easter break to perform. It was unfortunate that the performance was during the holidays as fewer children were available. However those who did attend were treated to an introduction to the instruments of the orchestra followed by the production. Parents and pupils alike thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Since then we have also been invited to produce a play for the Drum Theatre through the annual ‘Playhouse Project’. This is a project where professional writers write plays especially for children to perform. Each year six schools from York, Plymouth and London put on these plays for the public in their respective theatres. Our play is entitled ‘Ginger Jones and the Sultan’s Eye’ and we are performing at the drum in early July. The theatre guide us by sending a director to the school for a couple of visits and loaning us a technician to set out the lights and sound. It is a very exciting adventure story, a really good story for children of all ages. The play is cast and we are now beginning rehearsals. It is a really exciting time.

These different experiences for the children enabled by the Theatre Royal, have proved to be of great benefit. At Lady Modiford’s we continue to provide a rich a range of experiences for our pupils as possible to help them develop as a whole person not merely through academics. So look out for our production at the Drum soon!!

10th Dartmoor Society Debate –
What Future for the Dartmoor Village?

Sue Andrew

The way of life for Dartmoor village communities is changing rapidly, as indeed it is for villages throughout the country. Many problems exist; these include the loss of village schools, shops, pubs, petrol stations and post offices, inadequate public transport, lack of affordable housing for the next generation, loss of historically interesting buildings and insensitive development. All these factors are adversely affecting the fabric of village life in the 21st century. What then is the future for Dartmoor villages - with an increasing interest in 'sustainability', can villages seize the moment and develop new enterprises and re-establish shops and other facilities, perhaps with some key new housing schemes? The day will examine many of these factors and there will be ample time for general discussion. The Chairman for the day is Dr Tom Greeves.

Saturday 29th September 2007
Walkhampton Memorial Hall, 10.00am – 4.45pm

The programme is as follows:

10:00 Coffee.

10:30 Jenny Sanders (independent historian and specialist on historic buildings) - 'What has been happening to the Dartmoor Village?'

11:10 Chas Symes (Chairman, Burrator Parish Council) – ‘The View from the Parish - Issues and Ideas'.

11:50 Chris France (Director of Planning & Sustainable Development, Dartmoor National Park Authority) - 'The New Planning Framework'.

12:30 Discussion.

13:00 Lunch and Tour of Walkhampton village centre.

14:50 Oz Osborne (West Devon Environmental Network – Westden) – The Belstone Green Village Project.

15:30 Discussion.

16:15 Tea.

16:45 Depart.

This promises to be a timely, topical event, which will interest all those with concerns about the well-being of rural communities in the 21st century. The cost of the event is £10 per head for Society members (non-members £11), to include coffee, buffet lunch and tea. If you would like to attend, please send your cheque and a stamped addressed envelope to: The Dartmoor Society, PO Box 38, Tavistock, Devon, PL19 0XJ. Your ticket(s) will be posted to you.

What is 5 × 30?

Roz Tall  (Meavy Parish Hall)

Whatever age we are, we could all probably benefit from more exercise in our lives.

A healthy approach is to accumulate thirty minutes of moderate physical activity five times a week. Hence “5 x 30”, a local Mid and West Devon project, part funded by the Big Lottery Fund and Sport England to help communities to be more active. To encourage and support us in new activities FREE taster sessions can be arranged, taking place in Meavy Parish Hall.

If you would like to try any of the following: Yoga; Jive; Margaret Morris Movement (ages 2 ½ > adult), please phone me, Ros Tall on 852221. It is never too early, nor too late to start being more active. So don’t delay. Please call and register your interest as soon as possible! If we get enough people who are interested we will run the free taster sessions which hopefully will lead to a long term series of classes.

Walkhampton Film evening - 'Way out West'.

Jill Locock

Did the peals of laughter from the audience of this Laurel and Hardy film reach Sheepstor and Meavy from Walkhampton Memorial Hall on April 28th? From the volume and the enjoyment we had there it should have done! We also made a profit, including the Raffle takings and donations, of over £150 for the St Mary's Walkhampton West End Reordering Fund. So well done everybody, and thanks for 'a fine thing'.

If anyone wants to put on a fundraising / entertainment event for their village, its worth contacting Roger Verner email roger@villagesinaction.co.uk to see if anything on their range of entertainments would suit you.

Meavy Maids – Race for Life

Helen Langton  (Meavy C of E Primary School)

Following on from the article about ‘Get Meavy Moving’ in the last edition of the Beacon, I can update you on the Race for Life. This is the 8th year the 'Meavy Maids' have supported Race for Life, starting with just 2 competitors in 2000 and now this year a team of 35. Not only will we raise over £1,750 and think about all those who are dealing with Cancer (sufferers, carers or bereaved), but it shows the Maids are really committed to a healthy and fit lifestyle.

The Meavy Maids are Mums and Daughters from Meavy C of E Primary School and we are sponsored by The Rock Inn Yelverton.

Apart from providing information from the council, the web site can be used by any business within the parish to advertise and attract new business. This service is provided free of charge to all council tax and business ratepayers within the parish.

We have many businesses that could benefit from the national and international coverage that World Wide Web provides. If you are interested in taking advantage of this offer get in touch with either the clerk Lucie Luke or councillor Michael Parle.
